Guide to ACT Calculators Expert Tips SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Knowing when where and how to best use a calculator on the ACT can be tricky. You are allowed to bring a calculator on test day (none will be provided for you), and it can mean the difference of several points on the ACT to have a calculator versus having none. But what kind of calculator should you bring and how should you make best use of it during the test? In this guide, weââ¬â¢ll cover everything you need to know about calculators on the ACT, from when you're allowed to use them, to what kinds are allowed, to how to avoid the most common ACT calculator mistakes. What Section Can I Use a Calculator On? You may only use a calculator for the ACT math section. Despite the fact that some ACT Science questions require basic calculations like addition or division, a calculator is strictly forbidden on every section except for ACT Math. Do I Need a Calculator? Technically, you do not need a calculator for the ACT. This is because the ACT is a standardized test and it would be unfair of the makers of the test to discriminate against anyone who could not afford to buy a calculator. That said, you should definitely bring a calculator! Though you'll only ever need to perform basic calculations for the test, it's much less time consuming (and often far more accurate!) to plug $64*3.14159$ (or $Ãâ¬$) into your calculator than it is to solve it long-hand. If youââ¬â¢re doing every ACT math question by hand, you will most likely NOT complete the full section within the allotted time. So do bring your calculator (as well as an alternate calculator and/or extra batteries). Always keep this information in mind as you go through the test: a calculator isn't technically needed for the test. Think about how that applies to how you approach each question. If you think you're being asked to find the perimeter of a cube with side lengths of $âËÅ¡15$ and none of the answers are in root form (i.e., $4âËÅ¡15$), chances are you misread or misunderstood the question. Are they actually asking you for the cube's area? Or did you calculate the sides of the cube inaccurately? If you find that there is no way to find an answer to a problem without a calculator (basically, if you need to do something more than basic calculations, which we will discuss later in this guide), you are on the wrong track! Take a step back and reevaluate what you're being asked. One of these paths takes you much farther away than you wanted to be. What Calculators Are Allowed on the ACT? The ACT is a little more strict than the SAT is when it comes to the calculators you're allowed to bring. For example, the SAT allows the TI-89 (a popular calculator), while the ACT forbids it. For the ACT, you can bring any calculator that does NOT have computer algebra system (CAS) functionality. A CAS calculator can solve problems algebraically, which would defeat the purpose of many of the ACT questions. If your calculator is not on the restricted list, it's allowed. According to official ACT guidelines, you must clear all documents on your calculator (so that you cannot bring notes), all programs with CAS capability, and all apps with CAS capability. They specifically mention that it is not enough to disable these programs- they must be fully removed. That said, most proctors aren't as strict as the ACT guidelines are. If you have a restricted calculator or functions, it won't hurt you to try to bring it to the testing center. But do bring a back-up calculator that you're used to using in case your proctor won't let you use your first-choice calculator. Types of Calculators NOT Allowed on the ACT This is the forbidden valley list of calculators and devices. Anything NOT on this list is considered an ACT-approved calculator by default: You are NOT allowed to bring any kind of laptop, phone, tablet, or PDA to use as a calculator. You CANNOT have anything with a paper tape readout. Exception: If you can remove the paper tape for the test, you can use it. You CANNOT have anything that plugs in. Exception: If you can remove all power/electrical cords for the test, you can use it. You CANNOT have anything that makes noise or can communicate with another device. Exception: If you can turn off the sound for the test, you can use it. You CANNOT have anything that has a QWERTY keyboard on it. You CANNOT use anything with an infared data port Exception: Cover the infared data port with heavy opaque material like duct tape or electrician's tape. You'll need to do this for calculators like the HP 38G series, HP 39G series, and HP 48G. Texas Instruments You CANNOT have any model that begins with TI-89 You CANNOT have any model that begins with TI-92 You CANNOT have the TI-Nspire CAS (The TI-Nspire non-CAS is allowed) Hewlett-Packard You CANNOT have the HP Prime You CANNOT have the HP 48GII You CANNOT have any model that begins with HP 40G You CANNOT have any model that begins with HP 49G You CANNOT have any model that begins with HP 50G Casio You CANNOT have the fx-CP400 (ClassPad 400) You CANNOT have the ClassPad 300 You CANNOT have the ClassPad 330 You CANNOT have the Algebra fx 2.0 You CANNOT have any model that begins with CFX-9970G No official word on whether or not you're allowed to bring an abacus, but my advice is to stick with devices that were designed after 1980. What's the Best ACT Calculator? In terms of calculator use for the ACT, familiarity is better than gadgetry. Because you're only going to be asked to perform basic calculations on the ACT math section, you won't need the most high-tech and advanced calculator model in the world. Fancy calculators are more likely to slow you down while you try to figure out their quirks and functions than they are to help you. That said, if you are most familiar with a high-tech (and ACT-approved) calculator, definitely bring it! What's most important is that your calculator is one you know well and are used to using. So pick one calculator and use it for everything. Use this same calculator for your math classes as well as on the ACT, so that you can become familiar with it before test day. If, on the other hand, you have no preference and are looking for advice on a calculator model, I'd personally recommend the TI-30X as the best calculator for ACT Math. The TI-30X great if youââ¬â¢re on a budget (no matter where you shop, you can get it for less than $18) and will do everything you need- parentheses, negatives, exponents, square roots, four basic functions, etc.- without getting into the overly complex functions and capabilities (which you wonââ¬â¢t need anyway). But no matter what, make sure you familiarize yourself with your calculator before test day! Do some practice problems with your calculator at home before you take your official test. Don't just reach for the fanciest device you can find- make sure you really know your machine! How to Avoid Common ACT Calculator Mistakes Although you should definitely bring a calculator (again, preferably the calculator you feel most comfortable with), it is far more important to understand the question than it is to immediately reach for a calculator. Many problems are actually much simpler than they appear and can be done in seconds without a calculator. So donââ¬â¢t automatically reach for the calculator before you analyze the problem. With a problem like this, there are several approaches, each taking more or less time than the other. Option 1: Fastest way, no calculator. The question tells you this is an isosceles triangle. If you remember your formula for isosceles triangles, you can immediately say that the hypotenuse is $sâËÅ¡2$ or, in this case, $10âËÅ¡2$. So the answer is E. Option 2: Medium-fast, no calculator. You can quickly see that $10^2+10^2=200$. The hypotenuse, therefore, is: $âËÅ¡200$ or $âËÅ¡100*âËÅ¡2$ This becomes $10âËÅ¡2$. So the answer is E. Option 3: Slowest way, with calculator. If you forget both your isosceles triangle formula and how to reduce square roots, you can still do this problem (though it will take longer). $10^2+x^2=c^2$ You know that this is an isosceles triangle, so each side will be equal: $10^2+10^2=c^2$ $200=c^2$ $c=âËÅ¡200$ If you do not remember how to reduce the square root of 200, find the answer in your calculator (approximately 14.14) and then find the answer that matches. A, B, and C are eliminated, as they are integers. The square root of 20 will be far too small (4.47), since you are trying to find the square root of 200. The square root of 2 is 1.414. $(1.414)(10)=14.14$. So the answer is E, $10âËÅ¡2$ As with the above, some questions can be solved much faster in your head (or on scratch paper) than on a calculator. If the question requires a calculation you cannot do quickly or easily in your head, definitely use your calculator. But make sure to always double check your input line (the part where you type into your calculator) before you calculate the results! Plugging in the wrong values (or forgetting that crucial negative sign or parentheses) can make all the difference between a right and a wrong answer. For example, if you have $x=âËâ5$ and an equation $f(x)=x^2+12$, make sure that you're plugging in your $x$ correctly. There is a huge difference between plugging in $âËâ(5^2)+12$ and $(âËâ5^2)+12$ into your calculator! The first equation is inaccurate and gives you -13. The second equation is correct and gives you 37. Make sure you are calculating for $x$ equals -5 here, not the finding the negative of 5 squared. If youââ¬â¢re making numerous errors in your practice tests, write down the equation by hand first. Even if itââ¬â¢s a problem that looks simple, doing it entirely on a calculator (or in your head) can lead to errors. Write down your steps before you whip out the calculator. When to Use Your Calculator You will never need your calculator to do more than a few basic calculations. You will only ever be asked to: Add Example: $213+456$ Subtract Example: $3500âËâ1200$ Multiply Example: $33*10$ Divide Example: $54/3$ Take a Number to an Exponent And, even so, you'll only need to express a number to an exponent in a way that someone without a calculator could also do. For example, you may need to manipulate $x^23$ or $y^10$, but this is based on your understanding of exponent rules: Based on your knowledge of how exponents work, you know that $x^a*x^b=x^(a+b)$. So we have: $(2)(3)=6$ $x^4*x^5=x^(4+5)=x^9$ $y^1*y^8=y^(1+8)=y^9$ So the final answer is H, $6x^9y^9$ As you can see, this can all be done without a calculator. The ACT will never ask you for the answer to large exponent values, so you'll never need to find the value of $3^23$ or $2^10$, for example. The ACT math example above is typical of an exponent question you'll see on the test. Find the Square Root Square root problems will only be as complicated as making you find the value of perfect squares (e.g. $âËÅ¡81$), or having you reduce square roots (e.g. $âËÅ¡18=3âËÅ¡2$). If you know your basic squares ($2^2=4$, $3^2=9$, etc) and if you know how to reduce a square root, then you wonââ¬â¢t need a calculator. Combine Different Kinds of Calculations The hardest part of your calculations will be in keeping them straight and putting them together. Again, you can solve this problem in one of two ways- with or without a calculator. Option 1: Fastest way, no calculator. Think about the percentages in terms of solid units of something. In this case, think of them as marbles. If you have four marbles and increase the amount by 25%, you are adding one marble (25% is equal to $1/4$th). So now you have five marbles. Then, you must take away 20% of those five marbles. Well, 20% is $1/5$th, so you're now back to four marbles. You began with four marbles and you ended with four marbles; you have exactly what you started out with. So the answer is C, 100% Option 2: Slower way, with calculator. You could also solve the problem algebraically. $x+0.25x=1.25x$ $1.25xâËâ(0.2)(1.25x)=1x$ or 100% Either way, you are left with answer C, 100% Bottom line: if you find that you're trying to perform more complicated equations than these basic ones, you're likely going down the wrong path! Put your calculator down and examine what the question is really asking. Don't allow your time and energy to get sucked into doing unneeded calculations. The Take-Aways A calculator can be a great asset on the ACT, but only if you know how to use it properly. Make sure first that you're interpreting each problem correctly and develop the correct approach before you reach for your calculator. Itââ¬â¢s far more important that you have a solid understanding of the mathematical concepts youââ¬â¢ll be tested on for the ACT than it is for you to be an expert at manipulating your calculator. Double check that you're using one of the ACT-approved calculators and familiarize yourself with your calculator model before test day. Finally, know that if youââ¬â¢re going down the rabbit hole of functions for each question, there's likely a much easier way to solve the problem. How the Characters React Towards the Shooting of Candys Og Essay The way the characters react towards the shooting of Candyââ¬â¢s dog reveals a lot abut the characters that we might not have expected. Carlson offers to shoot the old dog, complaining many times of the smell. The shooting of Candys dog shows the callousness of Carlson and the reality of old age and infirmity. Carlson typifies the men George describes as ââ¬Å"the loneliest guys in the worldâ⬠. He is outwardly friendly, but essentially selfish. He finds the smell of an old dog offensive so the dog must be shot. He shows very little regard to the dogââ¬â¢s owner, Candy. He relentlessly pursues the dogââ¬â¢s death, more for his own comfort than to put the dog out of its misery. However, Steinbeck does show some sympathy in Carlson, when he suggests ââ¬Å"he wonââ¬â¢t even feel itâ⬠, referring to Candyââ¬â¢s dogs death. This is contrasted to Candyââ¬â¢s procrastination to put this event off when he says ââ¬Å"maybe tomorra, Leââ¬â¢s wait till tomorraâ⬠Steinbeck displays that Candy is trying to delay the put down of his dog and his reluctance to end his dogs life shows how much he loves the animal. ââ¬Å"Carlson had refused to be drawn inâ⬠this suggest that Carlson is determined and not to be put off. When Carlson brutally keeps after candy, candyââ¬â¢s reaction is described in the adverbs Steinbeck has used: ââ¬Å"uneasily,â⬠ââ¬Å"hopefully,â⬠ââ¬Å"hopelessly,â⬠and the way candy reacts: ââ¬Å"Candy looked for help from face to face.â⬠When he reaches out to Slim for help, even Slim says it would be better to put the dog down. Slim is portrayed as serene and a good listener/observer in this novel, and when Steinbeck suggests ââ¬Å"the skinner had been studying the old dog with his calm eyesâ⬠ââ¬â referring to Slim, it suggests that he had been very thoughtful about the whole incident and even showed his understanding and considerateness when he reminded Carlson to take a shovel, so Candy will be spared the glimpse of the corpse. ââ¬Å"I wisht somebodyââ¬â¢d shoot me if I get anââ¬â¢ a crippleâ⬠are the words Slim uses that Candy later echoes when he considers his own future. This perceptibly puts Candy in deep thought, it shows Candyââ¬â¢s realisation of his own mortality when Slim states this. The dog, in this case tells us something of the owner. When Steinbeck shows the dog nearing the end of its days it could show that candy was too. Also Steinbeck employs irony by saying that he wanted someone to ââ¬Ëshootââ¬â¢ him when he got ââ¬Ëoldââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëcrippledââ¬â¢ which he almost is. Slim also reassures Candy when he says ââ¬Å"you can have a pup if you want toâ⬠. When Candy finally gives in and allows Carlson to shoot his dog, it shows the reader that candy wants to be over and done with and wants his dog a swift and painless death. There is some empathy shown when Carlson says ââ¬Å"come on boyâ⬠to soften the blow for the dog and more so Candy. Once Carlson has taken the dog to shoot, Steinbeck builds the tension within the characters just before the dog is killed. ââ¬Å"George followed to the door and shut the doorâ⬠ââ¬â this proposes Georgeââ¬â¢s kind nature and sympathy towards Candy and his dog- this could be one reason as to why George did not give an opinion on whether Candyââ¬â¢s dog should be shot. When George offers ââ¬Å"anybody like to play a little euchreâ⬠it is evidently shown that George is trying to change the topic and he doesnââ¬â¢t want to worry Candy about the dog, this makes the reader see George taking peopleââ¬â¢s emotions into account before his own, we also saw this earlier in the book when George stands up for Lennie. We see this again when George ââ¬Å"ripple the edge of the deck nervouslyâ⬠this shows that he is also concerned about the whole situation. It is evident that whit also showed concern indirectly when he says ââ¬Å"what the hell is taking him so longâ⬠. When Steinbeck repeats ââ¬Å"a minute passed, and another minuteâ⬠he purposely extends the sentence which is a reflection as it prolongs the moment. And then when Steinbeck says ââ¬Å"the silence came into the room. And the silence lasted.â⬠Steinbeck employs short length sentences which make the moment seem longer and intensify the significance of that specific time. After ââ¬Å"the shot sound in the distanceâ⬠we are told that Candy ââ¬Å"slowly rolled over and faced the wall and lay silentâ⬠, this reaction suggests that candy tried to bravely take in what just happened by turning his back to it and attempting to keep unruffled. The use of short sentence shows us that initially after the shot, there were no comments by anyone which implied that it left them in shock and the realisation of what just happened was slowly sinking in everyoneââ¬â¢s head. Steinbeckââ¬â¢s employment of repetition of conjunctions with ââ¬Ëandââ¬â¢ lengthens the sentence at the end, expanding the climax of the scene, as the audience wants to know what happened to Candy, after his most beloved companion has gone. Carlson even cleans his gun in front of Candy after the deed is done, this reinforces his brutal character. While it may be true that killing the dog put it out of its misery, little concern is shown for Candys feelings after a lifetime of caring for the dog. Now Candy is like the rest of them ââ¬â alone.

The story of Saint Catherine Laboure Saint Catherine personally worked no miracles, nor did she practice externally heroic charity like other great saints. She sprang from upper middle class parents among the meadows and vineyards of Burgundy, France. Her father was an educated man and an excellent farmer living in the village of Fain-les-Moutiers not far from DiJon. Her sanctity consists in half a century of faithful service as a simple Daughter of Charity. Catherine was born of Peter and Louise Laboure on May 2, 1806. She was the ninth child of a family of eleven. The day after her birth she was baptized on the feast of the Finding of The True Cross. Even the feast of Catherine's baptism was prophetic, because Catherine was to find the cross in every turn of her life, and to have deep devotion for it, and to see a mysterious vision of the cross. When Catherine was nine years old, her saintly mother died. After the burial service, little Catherine went to her room, stood on a chair, took our Lady's statue from the wall, kissed it, and said: "Now, dear Lady, you are to be my mother." On January 25, 1818, Catherine received her First Holy Communion. From that day on she arose every morning at 4:00 a.m., walked several miles to church in order to assist at Mass, and to pray. One day she had a dream in which she saw an old priest say Mass. After Mass, the priest turned and beckoned her with his finger, but she drew backwards, keeping her eye on him. The vision moved to a sick room where she saw the same priest, who said: "My child, it is a good deed to look after the sick; you run away now, but one day you will be glad to come to me. God has designs on you - do not forget it." Later, she awoke, not knowing the significance of the dream. Sometime later, while visiting a hospital of the Daughters of Charity, Catherine noticed a priest's picture on the wall. She asked a sister who he was, and was told: "Our Holy Founder Saint Vincent de Paul." This was the same priest Catherine had seen in the dream. In January of 1830, Catherine Laboure became a postulant in the hospice of the Daughters of Charity at Catillon-sur-Seine. Three months later she was again in Paris, this time to enter the Seminary at the Mother House of the Daughters of Charity. Shortly after she entered her new home, God was pleased to grant her several extraordinary visions. On thr... ...d any praise and promise so she fled from it. She wanted to be left alone to carry out her humble duties as a Daughter of Charity. For over forty years, she spent her every effort in caring for the aged and infirm, not revealing to those about her that she had been the recipient of our Lady's medal. The Sisters with whom she lived held her in the highest esteem, and each one longed to be her companion. In 1876, Catherine felt she would die before the end of the year. Mary Immaculate gave Catherine leave to speak and break the silence of forty-six years. Catherine revealed to her Sister Superior that she was the sister to whom the Blessed Mother appeared. On December31, 1876, Saint Catherine passed on to the hands of Mary, this time, however, in heaven. Today her beautiful remains still lie fresh and serene. When her body was exhumed in 1933 it was found as fresh as the day it was buried. Her incorrupt body is encased in glass beneath the side altar at 140 Rue du Bac, Paris, beneath one of the spots where our Lady appeared to her. In the Chapel of the Apparition you can gaze upon the face and the lips that for forty-six years kept a secret, which has since shaken the world.

Introduction Cloud computing is the answer for ââ¬Å"affordableâ⬠business technology platforms. It is a more affordable solution for media content than any other medium, and this is why Netflix, Amazon.com, and Apple are among the leaders in cloud usage and development. Ultimately cloud computing will be the primary way data services are accessed by businesses and consumers alike. Marston, Li, Bandyopadhyay, Zhang, and Ghalsasi 2009 conclude cloud computing offers companies the opportunity to deploy cutting edge IT services without the enormous upfront costs that deter so many organizations from making the investment in infrastructure. Now that affordable solutions are becoming more readily available it is likely that more small and medium sized businesses will try and streamline their IT services. Small and medium sized businesses will likely be attracted to billing features that only charge for actual usage, as opposed to a flat fee. This format of doing business seems confusing on its surface, which led Kamra, Sonawane, and Alappanavar 2012, to compare Cloud Computing to Municipal Water Departments. Cloud Computing can be explained using a simple example. Many decades ago people used to go to their well to get the water needed to live their lives, nowadays things are different. Municipalities have placed water taps at every door step, so you can turn on and use the service as needed. Cloud computing is the same concept. You do not need to build a Water Plant to have water in your home, and now businesses do not need a massive computer lab to run their IT Services. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon provide a cloud to their customers, business partners and employees that allows services to be provided on a 24/7 basis. Discussion A perfect example of cloud computing would be Yahoo.Com and Gmail.Com e-mail addresses. As recently as seven years ago Microsoft Outlook was a program installed on the hard drive of your computer that helped to facilitate your incoming and outgoing e-mails. Now ââ¬Å"web-basedâ⬠or ââ¬Å"cloud mailâ⬠is what 99% of the people using computers use for e-mail services. A company will be able to use cloud services on a per usage, or metered basis. This is the future of computing and the majority of new services in the future will be based around this type of technology, which leads us to the importance of network uptime and availability. Ambrust et, al 2010, suggest that just as large ISPs use multiple network providers so that failure by a single company will not take them off the air, we believe the only plausible solution to very high network availability is multiple cloud computing providers used simultaneously. I agree wholeheartedly with this concept and this is how Facebook became the powerhouse of a company that it is today. In both the movie ââ¬Å"The Social Networkâ⬠, and the book ââ¬Å"The Accidental Billionairesâ⬠; Mark Zuckerberg, is described as ââ¬Å"convincedâ⬠that a network outage as short as one day could irreversibly unravel the entire company. Facebook is revered as an incredibly stable platform. While I do not have inside information with regard to Facebookââ¬â¢s cloud computing strategy, I believe it is a very easy assumption to make that they have multiple ISP and Cloud sources to ensure platform availability. As another example a company like Amazon.Com which has no retail presence, depends entirely on the uptime of their network and website, a disruption of a few hours in service could cost the company millions of dollars in lost sales opportunities. Multiple back up Internet Service Providers is a must. Conclusion Aljabre 2012, suggests the concept of cloud computing in business may sound ideal and easy to implement, but like all new technology being introduced in to a business with an IT system already in place has both negative and positive aspects. Aljabre uses Amazon.com as his example of a company that has successfully utilized this technology. Amazon has 80 million customers, and 17 thousand employees, and has a need for cloud access at the highest possible level. Amazon has a mission critical need for many different people, both employees and customers alike to be able to access the internal network for employees and the website itself for both sellers and buyers. Aljabre considers Amazon to be the number one company on the planet with regard to cloud utilization and the success of the company and high regard for its network stability is a testament to how much cloud computing has advanced in the short time it has been implemented. Virginia Watson Ross 2010 believes todayââ¬â¢s organizations are being tasked with finding ways to minimize costs, while their computing and data needs grow, cloud computing is a viable option to consider. With its economy of scale and high performance assets, it has the potential for meeting increased organizational computing and data management needs., and surges in demand, while minimizing costs. The challenge is to determine what factors drive a companyââ¬â¢s decision makers to choose or not to choose to employ cloud computing to meet organizational needs. The advantages of cloud computing include cost savings, meeting computing needs, reliability, and centralized security functions. This will lead to overall lower costs, improved information handling, and greater convenience for end users. All of these advantages make cloud computing worth considering. The Romantic Era - 1008 Words
A new approach to literature and art that rose in late eighteenth century was the beginning of the Romantic Movement. This was the first time poets and authors were able to strive for originality. The Romantic era was more open to mythic, mystic and spirituality than the enlightenment era had ever been. William Blake was a romantic poet. Romanticism was a movement, which was marked primarily by its rejection of the enlightenment ideologies and scientific methods, as well as its emphasis on the natural world, emotions, artistry and the personal expression. Growing up Blake`s childhood was dominated by spiritual visions which influenced his works and personal life. As a little boy he said he had seen a tree filled with angels. In 1794 Blake`s work Song of Experience, offers a set of companion pi eces that talk about the identical subject matters with a more experienced and knowing perspective. Blake wrote these two individual pieces to show his audience two completely different perspectives in the understanding of God, love and justice as an innocent child in Song of Innocence and as an experience grow adult in Song of Experience. Instead of looking at these poems a characterizing them in two dueling categories such as good vs. evil. We need to realize that both innocence and experience are important elements that have become separate from each other. We need to realize that both are needed to complete each other, much as male and female. Romantic poets had a strong way in which they showed their emotional expression; Blake used repetitious phrases in order to be able to highlight his emotions. In the Poem ââ¬Å"Londonâ⬠which was written in the series ââ¬Å"Song of Experienceâ⬠he describes the metropolitan area of the city of London and its citizens. Blake tries to give his readers imagery, he does this by using specific markers in London, this makes his poetry seem powerful.
